Indiana Basketball: Scoring a commitment from five-star ‘in Hoosiers’ grasp’
By Alec Lasley
Five-star froward Dawson Garcia just recently set his Indiana basketball official visit and has the recruiting world on notice with a fall decision looming.
Archie Miller and the Indiana basketball program received good news this week when it was announced that five-star forward Dawson Garcia would be taking his Indiana official visit on Oct 25-27, but now things seem to be heating up even more for the Hoosiers.
While Garcia had a list of seven schools, it was expected that after the Tar Heels secured a commitment from five-star big man Walker Kessler, adding to a 2020 class that had front court five-star forward Day’Ron Sharpe, the Tar Heels and Garcia would move in separate directions, as they have. Then, after the Kansas FBI and NCAA sanctions were released, there looks to be no more interest for Garcia to visit the Jayhawks.
Now, Marquette and Memphis seem to be the biggest competition to Indiana’s chances of landing the five-star talent, while Marquette and IU have the leg up on the Tigers.
Rivals’ Corey Evans touched on Garcia’s recruitment and gave a slight prediction of where he may end up.
"“Garcia also made for a surprise decision that he will commit and sign this fall, rather than waiting things out until the spring…Indiana is in a good spot and securing the talented forward’s commitment is within the Hoosiers’ grasp.”"
As it stands, Garcia has taken official visits to Minnesota and Memphis already this fall, and also took a junior year official to Marquette in the spring. With no other dates released as of now, one could guess there may only be one more visit on the horizon if his fall timeline is expected to be reached.
Archie Miller has done a tremendous job at making Garcia feel like a priority and with the front court being a major need in the next two classes, his spot in the 2020 class would be a welcomed sight in Bloomington.
Garcia’s addition to the Indiana roster for the 2020-21 season would give Archie Miller possibly two five-star forwards in the front court, playing alongside Trayce Jackson-Davis, and could help lead the Hoosiers to a deep NCAA Tournament run.
