Indiana Basketball: Javonte Brown-Ferguson talks IU, updates recruitment
By Alec Lasley
Class of 2021 four-star big man Javonte Brown-Ferguson filled Hoosier State of Mind in on his recruitment and what he thinks of the Indiana basketball program.
It has been a busy past few weeks for 2021 big man Javonte Brown-Ferguson and as the live period began, multiple high-major programs have been across the border to visit him, with the Indiana basketball staff keeping close tabs on him.
The Canadian big man is a very intriguing prospect for many programs due to the possibility of reclassifying from the 2021 class, to 2020. As for now, he plans to make that decision after the new year.
Brown-Ferguson was part of the Canada Elite AAU program on the Under Armour circuit this summer where he averaged 5.7 points and 3.7 rebounds while shooting 53 percent from the field in nearly 19 minutes per game.
Though there is no official list for Brown-Ferguson, there are multiple programs that he is in constant contact with.
"“I’ve been hearing from Indiana, Marquette, Kansas, Texas A&M, Stanford, WKU, Seton Hall, UConn a lot,” Said Brown-Ferguson."
As for the Hoosiers, the Indiana staff has made it quite simple why he is a priority.
"“They [Indiana] have been saying they’re really interested in me,” Brown-Ferguson said. “They say I suit their play style because I play with motor, intensity and lots of heart.”"
Before the assistant coaching change, the main point of contact for Brown-Ferguson was Bill Comar whom he built a “great relationship” with, but that has switched to new assistant Mike Roberts.
What exactly does Brown-Ferguson like about the Indiana program?
"“Indiana has great basketball and great history and has definitely produced some big time players,” He explained. “I could definitely see myself there.”"
Currently, there are three programs who have official visits scheduled with the 6-foot-11 big man; Texas A&M (Sept. 20), Kansas (Oct. 4), and Uconn (Oct. 24).
He broke down all three programs.
"Texas A&M: “They [Texas A&M] want me to go 2020,” He said. “They want me to come in a play and if I work hard enough and show that I’m ready, possibly start.”"
"Kansas: “They [Kansas] are really serious about me coming as a 2020, too.” Brown-Ferguson explained. “They said they need 3 bigs to play and I was included in this list.”"
"UConn: “Pretty much the same as A&M and Kansas,” He added. “They [UConn] have showed a lot of interest also. They have been coming to see me every week"
With just two more visits up for grabs for the remaining programs, Indiana definitely has a fighter’s chance and Brown-Ferguson says he is working on potentially setting an Indiana visit up.
Though Indiana was not in to visit the four-star big man this week, Brown-Ferguson said the Hoosiers will be in to see him next week.
Brown-Ferguson is currently ranked No. 93 in 247Sports 2021 class as a four-star prospect.
