Just a couple of months away from college basketballs season, the Indiana basketball program’s ‘secret scrimmage’ has been revealed.

With the Indiana football program set to take the field on Saturday, it’s easy to forget that college basketball is quickly approaching and the Indiana basketball program will get a good taste of where they stand early in the preseason.

This week, it was revealed that the Hoosiers would be playing Marquette in its preseason secret scrimmage on Oct 20 this season.

Indiana, who just released its 2019-20 schedule last week, will be tested in the non-conference slate with notable games against Florida State, UConn, Notre Dame, Arkansas, and Princeton. Having a matchup against an opponent at Marquette’s level will be a terrific preseason test to see where the Hoosiers are at, and what needs to be improved on before getting into the regular season.

Secret scrimmages have come about in the college basketball world in the past few years and while they aren’t so secret in terms of which team is playing which, no media or fans are allowed to attend, although stats and tidbits about the game end up making their way out to the general public.

Last year Indiana shut down what turned out to be one of the most high-powered offenses and players in the country when Marquette traveled to Bloomington. IU held Markus Howard to 18 points on just 6-of-14 shooting. While the Hauser twins – Sam and Joey – were effective, both players have since decided to transfer out of the program this offseason leaving a big hole in the Golden Eagles lineup.

While this Marquette roster will be a bit depleted, and not the top-10 caliber team they were expected to be this season, it will still be a good test for Archie Miller and Indiana.
