Indiana Football: Why Nate Sudfeld trade to Colts makes sense
By Alec Lasley
Former Indiana football quarterback has been rumored to be a trade piece for the Indianapolis Colts following Andrew Luck’s retirement.
Just two weeks before the start of the NFL season, Indianapolis Colts’ QB Andrew Luck dropped a bombshell on the football world when it was announced that he would be retiring from the NFL. Not only does this play a huge role in the Colts season, but it could also impact the roster position of a former Indiana football quarterback Nate Sudfeld.
The former Hoosier was set to be the backup for Carson Wentz and the Philadelphia Eagles but a broken wrist in the preseason has sidelined him until what looks like early October. Rumors have it however, that Sudfeld could be on the move and it makes sense for both the Colts and the Eagles to make a deal.
After the injury news to Sudfeld, the Eagles wasted no time and signed veteran backup Josh McCown. He has been a crucial member of many NFL locker rooms and is a proven veteran who can carry the team for a couple of weeks if need be. Because of that, why carry a third QB who will most likely not see the field at all this season?
Obviously the Colts now have a gaping hole in their quarterback room. Ole Miss grad Chad Kelly, the backup QB and the nephew of NFL great Jim Kelly, has always had maturity issues and has already been suspended by the league for the fist two games of the 2019 NFL season. That’s not something you want as your backup quarterback.
Sudfeld, albeit injured, would be a much better option at that position for the Colts. A hard worker, who is never in the headlines, and will work everyday to get better and help the team in any way. He also has a nice connection to the Colts’ staff. Head Coach Frank Reich was Sudfeld’s offensive coordinator in Philadelphia during their Super Bowl run and both sides are already familiar with the other.
The Colts also tried to steal Sudfeld away from the Eagles back in 2017 before he was signed from the practice squad to their 53-man roster.
With Sudfeld set to be a free agent this summer, this trade makes sense for both teams and could be something to keep an eye on if the Colts don’t sign a veteran quarterback in the first few weeks of the season.
