One of the newest members of Indiana baseball, and former St. Louis Cardinals great, received a great honor over the weekend.

The Indiana baseball program saw its incredible season come to an abrupt end in the NCAA Tournament in 2019, but the season may not have been as great if it weren’t for Scott Rolen. The former St. Louis Cardinals great was introduced as the Director of Player Development for Indiana before the 2019 season.

On Saturday, Rolen received a great honor as he was inducted into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame. He was one of three former greats to be inducted, including Jason Isringhausen and Mort Cooper. Those three joined the already 40 greats in the Cardinals’ Hall of Fame.

Playing for the Cardinals from 2002 to 2007, Rolen was a 7x All-Star, 8x Gold Glove winner, Silver Slugger winner (2002), NL Rookie of the Year (1997) and was a major part of the 2006 World Series winning team.

The Evansville, Indiana native may not have ever seen his baseball career take off like it did if it weren’t for the Philadelphia Phillies, however. Rolen was the 1993 Indiana Mr Basketball runner-up and had signed to play basketball for Georgia. It wasn’t until the Phillies drafted him in the ’93 draft and actually increased their offer to woo Rolen away from the Bulldogs and the sport of basketball.

For his career with the Cardinals, Rolen hit 111 home runs, and 453 RBI’s while hitting .286 from the plate. His on base percentage (OBP) of .370 ranks in the top-25 of Cardinals history.
