Indiana Football: Cody Latimer’s chance to prove himself for the Giants
The former Indiana football standout looks to step into the New York spotlight as a crucial member of the Giants in 2019.
As the season draws nearer, the New York Giants wide receiver depth chart looks more wide open than ever which bodes well for former Indiana football standout receiver Cody Latimer.
After the trade of Odell Beckham, the Giants were left with Sterling Shepard as their number one target and the duo of Golden Tate and Corey Coleman other presumed top options for the Giants offense. However, with Shepard fracturing his thumb, Coleman tearing his ACL, and Tate possibly suspended for the first four games of the season, Latimer will have his chance to prove himself as a viable deep threat for whoever is under center.
Latimer is entering his sixth season in the league; his first four coming with Denver (which included a super bowl ring in 2015) and last season with New York.
When he has seen time on the field, he has been a decent contributor thus far in his career, and shown potential as a return man and deep threat. Though he was only able to appear in six games last season, of which he started two, he racked up 190 yards and a touchdown on just 11 catches. That’s good for over 17 yards per reception, and when projected over the course of 16 games he would have been on pace to rack up nearly 30 catches and over 500 yards.
If Latimer can put together a good training camp and earn an every-down role to start the season, look for him to capitalize on his opportunity and build upon the promise he showed last season.
At just 26 years old and already having five years of experience under his belt, this is a pivotal season for Latimer to prove himself as reliable top-three receiving option for an NFL team.
