Indiana Basketball: Jordan Geronimo on verge of breakout, lands IU offer
By Alec Lasley
One of the biggest rising prospects in the 2020 class is starting to land high-major interest including an offer from the Indiana basketball program.
The Indiana basketball program and head coach Archie Miller added another target to the Hoosiers’ 2020 recruiting board this weekend, extending a scholarship to one of the biggest breakout performers, Jordan Geronimo.
On one of the first days of the Adidas Gauntlet Finale, Archie Miller wasted no time and showed his interest in the 6-foot-5 wing from Mass Rivals (MA), ironically the same school that housed former Hoosier Noah Vonleh.
Geronimo talked with Scoopman TV about the Indiana offer and his recruitment so far.
"“Indiana’s pitch was explaining to me how they were going to use me in their system and how I can be a basketball star in the next couple of years under the right development,” he explained. “He started listing NBA players that he coached and I’m not going to lie, that kind of got me feeling some type of way.”"
Geronimo’s style of play is a lot of another former Hoosier, OG Anunoby. Rivals’ recruiting analyst Corey Evans broke down Geronimo’s game following another breakout weekend.
"“To say that Geronimo brings an exciting brand of basketball to the playing floor would be a total disservice to everything that he is capable of achieving. Young for his grade level but with the body already in tow. Bouncy, a capable shot maker, active and a defensive weapon, Geronimo has a lot of OG Anunoby qualities to him. He is far from a finished product and a leader has yet to emerge in his recruitment, which just makes the next few months tracking the likely-to-be-ranked prospect even more exciting.”"
Iowa, Penn State, Providence and Texas A&M are some of the other high-majors who extended an offer to the wing this weekend. Boston College, George Mason, and Virginia Tech are some other notable offers that Geronimo holds.
Throughout his season on the AAU circuit, he was extremely steady, averaging 9.8 points per game on 54 percent from the field and 35.4 percent from three. He’s also added 3.9 rebounds per game. Though his numbers may be a bit lower than other breakout performers, Geronimo attempted more than 10 shots just four times this season. This weekend however, he averaged 13.3 points per game.
Geronimo is great in transition where his athleticism shines, and he also has a strong frame and good length to finish through contact at the rim. He also has a good ability to knock down three’s, but could get more consistent from game to game.
Geronimo’s breakout is no surprise for the Mass Rivals AAU program. In the past few seasons they have seen players like Wenyen Gabriel, Wabissa Bede, and Akok Akok all see their recruitment take off in July.
