Indiana Basketball: Four-star target named day one standout
By Alec Lasley
The last live evaluation period of the summer is a busy one for coaches and players and one Indiana basketball target was named a standout on day one.
The nation’s top high school basketball players and college coaches are traveling all over the country during the only evaluation period of July and the first day was full of top notch performances. While most of the high-level tournaments began on Wednesday, coaches weren’t allowed in the gym until the official start of the evaluation period, beginning on Thursday.
Multiple Indiana basketball targets are in action all week and have the staff spread out taking in as much action as they can.
A prospect that showed up on the Indiana radar recently was named a standout by 247Sports evaluators for day one due to his performances at the Adidas Gauntlet on Thursday.
Andre Curbelo is a very shifty point guard who is a terrific passer and playmaker for the NY Jayhawks. He is exactly what you would want out of your point guard.
In his two games on Thursday, Curbelo averaged 13.0 points on 46.9 percent shooting, 5.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 2.0 steals in 29.5 minutes per game.
The 247Sports analysts had this to say about Curbelo’s performance and all-around game.
"In an overtime win over Game Elite, Curbello was fantastic. The high IQ point guard made some incredible passes, and really did a good job of controlling the game. While at times he can get a little too deep when dribbling into the lane, Curbello does virtually everything else exactly how you would want from a point guard. He is a solid shooter, he will compete on the defensive end, and he is a fantastic playmaker. While he isn’t the most explosive athlete, he makes up for it with a tremendous change of pace dribble, and his willingness to play with a high motor on every single possession."
Ranked No. 59 in 247Sports Composite Rankings, Curbelo is receiving interest from Illinois, St. John’s, West Virginia, Florida, Louisville, TCU, Kansas, and Indiana amongst others.
In a recent interview, Curbelo talked about his role and why he loves the point guard position so much.
"“I think the point guard’s job is to feed their guys, drive, make everybody collapse and then give it to the corner to the shooters, inside, and that’s just how I see the game. I don’t see it another way.”"
Archie Miller has made it a priority to get a point guard in 2020 and with Caleb Love receiving national recognition from some of the Blue Bloods, he has reached out to a couple more point guards in the class to keep his options open if Love were to end up elsewhere.
