The former Indiana basketball guard received good news today as the Kings made a decision on his future with the team.

It has been an interesting offseason for former Indiana basketball guard Yogi Ferrell despite not being a free agent.

The Sacramento Kings have made a couple of signings this offseason that put Ferrell’s spot on the team in jeopardy and it came down until Thursday for the Kings to make a decision on his contract.

Sacramento had until July 4 to either waive Ferrell or guarantee his $3.2 million salary for the 2019-20 season. The team opted to keep him and instead, waive second-year guard Frank Mason III.

Ferrell struggled to find a consistent role last season appearing in 71 games and averaging 5.9 points and 1.9 assists in 15 minutes per game. This season doesn’t look any more promising as the Kings signed Cory Joseph in free agency as their backup point guard to De’Aaron Fox.

After starting his career off with the Brooklyn Nets as an undrafted free agent, Ferrell found a home in Dallas, averaging 10.8 points and 3.4 assists in his year and a half with the Mavericks.

After backing out of his deal to return to the Mavericks in 2018, he signed a two-year deal with the Kings for $6.2 million.

With Ferrell’s contract situation behind him now, it will be interesting to see how he plays this season and if he plays any more free when he’s on the floor.
