Indiana Basketball: All-time Hoosiers starting five
By Alec Lasley
Guard: Steve Alford (1983-1987)
One of the former players that Indiana fans seemingly wanted to take over the Indiana program after Crean’s departure, Alford was a tremendous player in his own right.
In his four years in Bloomington, Alford was the first player to be named the team’s MVP four times and also earned All-Big Ten honors in his final three seasons.
As a sophomore, Alford was part of the 1984 Summer Olympic team that won a Gold Medal. He averaged 10.3 points per game, was second in assists, and shot 64.4 from the field on the team that was coached by Bob Knight.
Alford was named an All-American in his junior and senior seasons, and Big Ten MVP his senior year as well.
Winning a National Championship in 1987, he averaged 19.5 points and 3.1 assists for his Indiana career. He currently ranks second in Indiana history with 2,438 career points.
