Indiana Basketball: Archie Miller extends offer to top 2021 forward
By Alec Lasley
One of the top forwards in the 2021 class was extended an offer from Archie Miller and the Indiana basketball program.
Archie Miller and the Indiana basketball program have had a busy weekend with camp ongoing, but still made time to squeeze in some recruiting talk.
Silver Creek F Trey Kaufman was extended an offer on Saturday while his team participated in Indiana’s camp, per Drew Davis.
The four-star prospect has been on Indiana’s radar for quite some time even making an unofficial visit in May.
Now in the middle of the Adidas Gauntlet circuit with 2021 Indiana Elite, Kaufman’s sophomore season for Silver Creek ended with a 3A State Championship. On the season, he averaged 14.8 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.8 blocks per game.
While Kaufman does have a versatile skillset, he is most effective as a traditional post player. He has good strength for just a rising junior and utilizes that on almost every possession. Kaufman is able to use his agility to score against a bigger post player, but also knows when to take advantage of a mismatch. His motor and consistency when running the open floor allows him to get inside with deep post position on many possessions.
What makes his post game so diverse at this age, is his passing ability. If Kaufman does have a mismatch that forces a double team, he has good enough passing ability and vision that makes it easy on his teammates, and gives opponents headaches.
The 6-foot-7 forward is currently ranked No. 65 in the 2021 class according to 247Sports, but is just the third ranked prospect in Indiana.
The 2021 class is gearing up to be one of the best classes in Indiana in recent years and prioritizing some of the top players in the state early on should set up the Indiana staff for a great class.
Archie Miller has been behind the eight ball with in-state recruiting in future classes, having to focus on the class at hand, ever since he has taken over the reigns. With his ability to win the in-state battle at such a high rate already, giving him more time to build solid relationships with these recruits could jumpstart his foundation and rebuild the Indiana program that has struggled over the course of the last couple of seasons.
