Indiana Baseball: Hoosiers win big, set up elimination game with Louisville
By Alec Lasley
The Indiana Baseball program will be faced with a tough task as they head into an elimination game against Louisville.
After a nice bounce back win on Saturday, winning 9-5, Indiana Baseball needs another good showing in order to stay alive in the NCAA Tournament.
In what was a matchup most people thought we’d get, they never thought it would be an elimination game in the loser’s bracket.
On Sunday, Indiana will take on the No. 1 seeded Louisville Cardinals in what will be a big matchup as well as rematch of a regular season showdown that went the distance.
The Hoosiers hosted the Cardinals in May in what went down as a terrific game, ultimately ending up as an 8-7 loss for Indiana. Now, Louisville is ranked No. 7 in the nation and look to get the same result as before, a win.
Indiana went with a non-traditional pitching rotation in that matchup as they sent eight different pitchers to the mound, none of which pitched for more than two innings.
Now, the Hoosiers will most likely turn to Tanner Gordon as their starter, hoping he can continue his strong play as of late. After a shaky start to his season in which the Hoosiers lost three of his first four starts, they have since won eight of his last 11.
On the season, Gordon has shown he can be someone who the Hoosiers can rely on for long innings, with six of his starts going over seven innings. Though he will have a shorter string today, it is comforting to a team that knows he has the arm for it.
Bobby Miller, who is 5-1 on the year with a 4.16 ERA, is expected to get the start for the Cardinals when they face off against Indiana.
Starting off as more of a reliever this season, he has been morphed into a starter as the season went on. Unlike Gordon, Miller has just two starts over seven innings, with the majority of his outings around four to five innings.
The Hoosiers and Cardinals face off Sunday at 12 pm ET.
