On Thursday afternoon Boogie Ellis asked for his release from Duke and it has a few implications for Indiana basketball, and the rest of the 2019 recruiting class.

The No. 36 overall player in the 2019 class, Ellis committed to Duke in November, signing his letter of intent on November 20, over Memphis, North Carolina, USC, and San Diego State.

How exactly does this affect the Hoosiers? A couple of ways.

The obvious question would be if Indiana will reach out to the four-star recruit or not. The answer is most likely not, however you never really know. There was never a conversation before, in his initial recruitment, so there most likely won’t be now.

The bigger way Indiana plays into the situation is the fact that Memphis was on his list, and 247Sports Director of Basketball recruiting Evan Daniels said one school that will get back in the mix for Ellis will be the Tigers.

With fellow four-star guard Lester Quinones said to be leaning towards Memphis and Indiana, this news of Ellis and Memphis’ mutual interest could sway Quinones towards Bloomington.

Quinones is scheduled to have an in-home visit with Archie Miller today, Thursday, a week before his scheduled announcement date of May 10.

Because of so much uncertainty surrounding the availability of scholarships at Memphis, with four open and in the mix with now five players, Indiana seems like a much clearer option when it comes to open playing time.
