Indiana Football: Alcohol to be sold at Memorial Stadium starting this fall

Indiana football games will have a new addition this season, and it has nothing to do with the actual game taking place.
In a new development, alcohol will now be served at Memorial Stadium this fall during Indiana football games, per a release.
Announced Tuesday, beer and wine will be available for all 21+ year old attendees at the football games.
What has been a big discussion for the past couple of years, Indiana now becomes the sixth Big Ten school to institute this new rule, in addition to Purdue, Ohio State, Illinois, Minnesota and Maryland.
In the release made by the Athletic Department and University, Athletic Director and Vice President Fred Glass also issued this statement,
“Our main goals with this initiative are to enhance the gameday experience for our fans and reduce alcohol-related incidents in and around the stadium… While there will be some comparatively modest revenue generated by these sales, that is not the primary purpose of this program. Ten percent of our net beer and wine public sales revenues will be given to campus for alcohol safety programming.”
Indiana University consulted the Wasserman Firm to conduct a study on how the possibility of providing alcohol at games could result in a decrease of alcohol-related incidents. In their findings, they came away with a lot of eye-opening data.
Looking at more than 50 other schools that sell alcohol to the public during games, the study found that it improved game-day experience for fans, attendance, and a reduction in alcohol-related incidents.
Two examples the study found was related to Ohio State and West Virginia. Ohio State reported a 65 percent drop in alcohol-related incidents in the first year that they served alcohol at games, while West Virginia showed a 35 percent drop as well.
While alcohol will now be served at games, it will be a third party vendor who deals with the distribution.
