Indiana Football: Everything you need to know for the Spring Game
By Alec Lasley
Indiana football conducts their annual spring game on Friday, where the fans get their first look at the new roster for 2019.
After a couple of weeks practicing ‘behind closed doors’, Indiana football gives their fans their first look at the team with their Spring Game.
While the Spring Game usually brings a certain amount of buzz and excitement, this year’s game seems more on the radar due to the terrific recruiting class brought in by Coach Tom Allen.
Ranked 38th in the country, the highest in Indiana football program history, their class is led by three four-star prospects in Sampson James (RB), Cameron Williams (OLB), and Beau Robbins (DE). Included in the class, but not the ranking, is four-star quarterback Jack Tuttle who was recently announced as immediately illegible by the NCAA.
For the game, it will be split into four 12-minute quarters and a 10-minute halftime.
One of the matchups that all fans were looking forward to was at the quarterback position. While redshirt freshman Michael Penix Jr has been recovering from a torn ACL, he is expected to be back on the field on Friday for light work.
As for Jack Tuttle, Indiana fans will have to wait a little longer to see him play. He is out with a “short-term sickness”, so returning starter Peyton Ramsey is the only scholarship quarterback healthy enough to go full speed.
Some other matchups to watch start in the backfield. With Stevie Scott coming off of a terrific freshman season, the Hoosiers also have Cole Gest, Ronnie Walker and freshman four-star product Sampson James. While it will be a crowded running back room, it will also be extremely talented.
On the defensive side of the ball, safety Bryant Fitzgerald looks to step up as the main leader on the defensive end after the departure of Jonathan Crawford. Some other defensive backs to be on the lookout for are Juwan Burgess, A’Shon Riggins and Khalil Bryant.
One of the question marks heading into this season was the offensive and defensive lines. With many departures on both sides, there is a lot of unproven talent or underclassmen looking at increased playing time.
A guy who has had an impressive spring so far is defensive lineman James Head. A physical specimen, he can play almost any d-lineman position bringing a lot of versatility with him wherever he goes. Jerome Johnson, who led the team in sacks last year with 3.5, returns and will be a crucial member of the line as well.
