Calbert Cheaney, Indiana basketball’s and the Big Ten’s all time leading scorer with 2,613 career points, will be inducted into the 2019 College basketball Hall of Fame.
Announced today per an Indiana athletics release, Cheaney is among six former players and three former head coaches who have been selected to the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2019
Cheaney had a decorated career during his time at Indiana, winning numerous awards ranging from Big Ten Player of the Year, a unanimous All-American Selection, and being named the Naismith and Wooden National Player of the Year as a senior.
As one of the only Hoosiers to make the NCAA Tournament in each of their four years, Cheaney made it farther in the tourament each year, from losing in the first round as a freshman, to making the Sweet Sixteen as a sophomore, and reaching the Final Four as a junior. He finished his careeer making it to the Elite Eight as a senior.
Following his career at Indiana, he was selected with the sixth pick in the 1993 NBA Draft by the Washington Bullets where he had a long NBA career as a member of numerous NBA organizations.
Joining Cheaney in the 2019 Hall of Fame class includes Duke great Shane Battier, UNLV’s Larry Johnson, Purdue’s Terry Dischinger, point guard Ernie DiGregorio from Providence, and Stanford’s star shooting guard Todd Lichti.
As for coaches, Arizona’s Lute Olson, Utah’s Rick Majerus, and Valparaiso’s Homer Drew will also be 2019 inductees for the College basketball Hall of Fame.
The induction ceremony will take place later this year in Kansas City, on Nov. 24.
