Indiana Basketball: Women run out of steam late against Oregon
By Alec Lasley
The women’s Indiana basketball program fell to Oregon on Sunday night, ending their season just shy of a Sweet 16 berth.
It’s another terrific season for Teri Moren and the women’s program for Indiana basketball.
Last season, which ended in an NIT Championship, was followed up with an NCAA Tournament berth, and just the third NCAA Tournament win in program history, two of which are held by Moren.
This season came to a finish with a 91-68 loss in the second round to Oregon, the nation’s seventh-ranked team and the No. 2 seed in the Portland Regional.
Oregon, one of the most efficient teams in the nation were led by All-American junior Sabrina Ionescu, who finished the game with a triple-double. The Ducks shot 51.5 percent from the field, while making 13-of-29 shots from deep. They also dished out 22 assists on 34 field goals.
Although the Hoosiers were able to hang with Oregon into the middle of the third quarter, Oregon’s talent and experience was too much to handle.
Bendu Yeaney, a Portland native, was lost in the third quarter to an apparent Achilles injury, and the Hoosiers never saw the lead under 10 points after that.
Ali Patberg led Indiana with 16 points while Jaelynn Penn added 15.
Despite the loss, there is nowhere to go but up for the Hoosiers. With just one senior in their starting lineup, they should be a force in the Big Ten for the next couple of years.
Indiana will return their four leading scorers and top two reserves while also bringing in a top-20 recruiting class next season.
