The Indiana basketball program added to their 2019 class over the weekend, as Zionsville native Nathan Childress accepted a preferred walk-on spot next season.

Over the weekend, Archie Miller and the Indiana basketball program grew their 2019 recruiting class by one, when Nathan Childress accepted a preferred walk-on spot.

The 2019 prospect was committed to Bethel College before re-opening his recruitment a couple of weeks ago after a coaching change.

Childress missed most all of July due to a few injuries, missing the AAU evaluation period, but did hear from Valparaiso, Davidson, Idaho, Penn, WKU, and Bucknell.

A pretty athletic wing, he averaged 14.5 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.7 steals, and 1.7 blocks per game as a senior. Though he didn’t attempt a lot of three’s, only 59 attempts, he connected on 36 percent of them, having the potential to become a consistent shooter on the wing.

Excited about the opportunity, Childress had this to say regarding his choice to walk-on.

"“I’m definitely excited to have the opportunity…I want to go in and work hard and I think I can help the team to be better.”"

Though he did go up against some top level competition, and held his own, don’t expect Childress to make an impact, or even receive much playing time next season. If he does end up helping the Hoosiers it will be in practice everyday, or come later in his career.

A preferred walk-on is guaranteed a roster spot, but does not receive an athletic scholarship, so it doesn’t effect any of the possible prospects Indiana is still recruiting.
