Indiana Basketball: Hoosiers named a one seed in the NIT

The Indiana Hoosiers, who were the fourth team on the first four out list for the NCAA Tournament, will be a one seed in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT).

Announced Sunday night, Indiana’s season goes on, just not as expected back in November.

As a first seed squad in the NIT Tournament, Indiana will play St. Francis (PA) in the first round at home in Assembly Hall on Tuesday at 7pm ET. This game will also be televised on ESPN.

The other one seeds in the NIT Tournament are TCU, UNC-Greensboro, and Alabama. Indiana is two spots behind TCU from holding the highest N.E.T. ranking at 54, trailing the Horned Frog’s ranking of 52.

If the Hoosiers manage to get a win in the first round, they will potentially have the opportunity to avenge a loss from eariler this season against fifth-seeded Arkansas in the second round if they can beat fourth-seeded Providence in their first round matchup.

Programs joining the Hoosiers in the region and NIT is Clemson as the second seed who will face the seventh seed Wright State. Furman comes in as the third seed and they will place Wichita State, the sixth seed.

Notable teams also partcipating in the NIT tournament include the Dayton Flyers, Archie Miller’s team prior to arriving at Indiana, and Butler, whom the Hoosiers defeated earlier this season at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on a buzzer-beating three pointer by freshman Rob Phinisee.

The only other Big Ten team joining Indiana in the NIT Tournament is Nebraska, who beat the Hoosiers in Assembly Hall on January 14th, 66-51.

The highest seed will be the host of each game up until the semifinals, where the teams will finish up the tournament in Madison Square Garden from April 2-4.
