Indiana Basketball: Analyzing Archie Miller’s tenure at Indiana
Patience: Coaching Turnover
Obviously, when you fire a coach you have to go through the process we are enduring right now with Archie Miller.
A new coach needs to establish his culture, recruit players that cater to his system, and coach inexperienced players to become valuable assets to the team. It usually takes about three years for you to truly judge a coach’s skills because you have to give him a chance to coach his team and not the leftovers of someone else’s team.
If Indiana were to fire Archie Miller, this process would have to start all over again. You’d have to be absolutely sure that Miller is completely incompetent and has no potential to improve, and I just don’t find that to be true.
He has done an excellent job of recruiting (especially in-state) and has proven he can coach at an elite level from his days at Dayton, and some of the big wins he has had as the head coach at Indiana.
