Indiana Basketball: Late addition to the 2019 recruiting class?
By Alec Lasley
The Hoosiers are still in the mix for a few prospects in the 2019 class, but there has been a recent development between Indiana basketball and this recruit.
With Keion Brooks’ recruitment and decision at a standstill as of now, and the Hoosiers not projected to get any of the other top prospects in the country, Archie Miller has gone after a couple sleepers who are on the rise, to finish off the 2019 recruiting class.
The Hoosiers currently have just two commits in their class, but seem to be on a path to finish with three or four, depending on how things pan out over the next two months.
With rebounding and size in the front court proving to be an issue this season, the coaching staff has put more of an emphasis on big men in the class.
Check out this week’s recruiting roundup.
Tre Mitchell (Woodstock Academy; C, 6-9)
A late bloomer in the 2019 class, Mitchell is a big man who continues to rise up the ranks, up to no. 79 in the country according to 247 sports.
The four-star prospect is your traditional back-to-the-basket big man who can dominate a game in the paint. Not very comfortable outside of 15 feet, Mitchell uses his terrific and advanced footwork for his age to finish around defenders.
With an effective face-up game, he has great touch around the rim. At 245 pounds, Mitchell has great size and strength to body smaller defenders. Though he doesn’t have terrific lift off the floor, his high IQ allows him to make up for it.
Going into this season, Mitchell lost around 40 pounds, growing into his body, which has contributed to his recent rise in the rankings.
For his recruitment, as of now it is a two man race between Uconn and Notre Dame, but Indiana has been in contact with Mitchell and seen him play on many occasions.
Mitchell is currently listed in the 2019 class but has the option to reclassify to the 2020 class. All of the talk is of him remaining a 2019 recruit, and if so, another big body would surely help the Hoosiers.
