Indiana Basketball: Point guards the Hoosiers need in 2020
By Alec Lasley
The Hoosiers are lacking significant backcourt recruits in the next two classes, so let’s look at some names on the radar for Indiana basketball.
Indiana basketball is all but done in their 2019 recruiting class, with Trayce Jackson-Davis and Armaan Franklin already committed, and just waiting on a couple last recruits to make their decisions.
Either way, their backcourt is set and they won’t be signing another guard in the 2019 class.
With Romeo Langford expected to go pro after this season and Devonte Green to be a senior next year, the Hoosiers are very slim in the backcourt for the 2020 year.
Though Armaan Franklin will be a solid backcourt member, for most likely four years, he is more of a hybrid, combo guard with off the ball skills, not a point guard, which the Hoosiers need.
We have already seen what happens this season when Rob Phinisee is off the floor, with the lack of depth at the point guard position being a major concern moving forward.
Here are point guards that the Hoosiers are going after in the 2020 class that could be major pickups down the line.
Check out this week’s recruiting roundup.
Caleb Love (Christian Brown College; 6-3 170 lbs)
Having been to Indiana on an unofficial visit just over a month ago, Love is a top priority for the Hoosiers in the 2020 class.
A solid playmaker and distributor, right now Love is known for his scoring ability. With good size for a point guard, he is a terrific overall rebounder.
Love has good quickness and shifty athleticism that allows for him to finish at will in the lane through contact. Having range that stretches out to almost 23 plus feet, he also has a great mid-range game.
A consensus top-40 player on 247 sports, Love is currently ranked 34 in the composite rankings.
Season Averages: 20.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 2.1 steals,
Nimari Burnett (Prolific Prep; 6-3 180 lbs)
A name that continues to rise, Burnett is a combo guard that still has point guard abilities, shown in his all around performance against Spire Academy over the weekend in the Hoop Tournament in Dayton, OH. posting a 36 point, 6 rebound, and 5 assist performance.
The 6-foot-3 guard has a great mix of athleticism and length that makes him a force on the defensive end. With a good shooting stroke, Burnett is a lethal three point shooter, with NBA type range.
Although he is a score first guard, Burnett has the ability to play on the ball and be a distributor and playmakers for others.
The No. 35 player in the country, according to 247 composite rankings, Burnett has been very open about wanting to visit Indiana, and continuing to develop the relationship.
Season Averages: 20.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 1.6 steals
