Two Hoosiers’ soccer players were selected in the 2019 MLS Draft this week that took place in Chicago.

It was draft time in Chicago this past week for Major League Soccer (MLS), and there were a few Indiana Hoosiers in attendance to hear their name’s called.

The Hoosiers, who had the second most players from a program drafted in the first two rounds with two, had one player selected in the first and the second round on Friday.

Sophomore Griffin Dorsey was the first Hoosier to go, when he was drafted sixth overall by Toronto FC.

The midfielder amassed eight goals with 11 assists in 44 games played for Indiana. After being named to the Second Team All-Big Ten team his freshman season, Dorsey took another step up being selected to the First Team All-Big Ten team this past year along with a United Soccer Coaches (USC) Second Team All-America selection.

While on stage, Dorsey took a moment to recognize a young boy, named Caleb, who had made an impact on Dorsey this past year, saying simply, “I play for you.”

Caleb, who suffers from an immunodeficiency, was first introduced to the Hoosiers earlier this season, and got to share a special moment with Dorsey.

The second Hoosier to be selected was that of Rece Buckmaster, with the 32 overall pick and pick number eight of the second round, by the New York Red Bulls.

Buckmaster, who was a four year player for Indiana, was a Second Team All-Big Ten his senior year.

Though Buckmaster wasn’t on most scouts boards throughout the season, he had an impressive MLS combine performance that saw him rise up draft boards just prior to the draft.

The Red Bulls, who insistence on moving up in the draft to get Buckmaster, ended up trading the rights of a player to be named later for Buckmaster.

"“At the New York Red Bulls we go after guys that are fearless, have personality, that physically have something, that are good human beings, and he checked all the boxes,” Red Bulls head coach Chris Armas said. “So, once we got by positionally what we were hoping to get out of this draft, we rated him high. We had him as the highest ranked right back here, so we think we got a winner.”"
