Indiana Basketball: College Basketball Royalty
By Dylan Broady
In this article we would like to discuss how Indiana Basketball is among the top in College Basketball history.
We are widely known in the country as “the” basketball state. College basketball is always more fun to watch when Indiana Basketball is nationally ranked and televised. We have all discussed the success that this year’s team has accomplished thus far. We would like to take a trip down memory lane during this holiday season.
We want to remind Hoosier Nation why we are considered basketball royalty. Without further ado here are some really fun and exciting facts about your Indiana Hoosiers Basketball team.
RECORDS
Our Indiana Hoosiers currently rank sixth in NCAA Tournament history with 39 total appearances. Our last being in 2016 and our last tournament win coming against the rival Kentucky Wildcats. It’s no secret that we haven’t lived up to expectations as of late. Indiana Basketball has been an afterthought of sorts. Rest assured dear Hoosiers, our team is once again on the rise.
Our Hoosiers are also 6th-ranked when it comes to NCAA Tournament victories. We currently have 66 of them to our name. Keep in mind we haven’t been to an NCAA Championship game since 2002 when we lost to Maryland. This is impressive when you think about how we haven’t really been a true legitimate threat in recent history.
Everyone that watches College Basketball loves to talk about who will make it to the Final Four. This is something we haven’t done since 2002. It has been 16 years since we have been seen in the limelight. You would think a program like ours would make it there more often. You will be surprised to read that we still rank in the top 10 all-time when it comes to Final Four appearances.
We have eight of them to our name. Let’s dive into our own conference. We currently have 22 Big Ten Championships and have the best winning percentage in the conference amongst the other Big Ten programs. We are the very best of the Big Ten by a mile. Take pride Hoosiers, our program is the most elite there is or ever will be. This season has helped add to our Big Ten resume.
RANKINGS
Our Indiana Hoosiers have been ranked in the AP Poll 557 times. That’s good enough for sixth all-time. Our boys have spent 54 total weeks ranked No.1 overall. Which is also good for sixth all-time. These are amazing records and rankings, especially if you consider that we have been a pretty dormant program most of the 2000’s. We have struggled with the rise of the Carolina teams, the Florida teams and California teams.
Not to mention the teams in our own backyard. So when that nasty Purdue fan wants to ramble about wins, remind them of what we have accomplished. We rank fourth all-time in NCAA Championships with five. That’s really impressive, because nobody has really caught up to us. Oh we won’t forget to mention that we are the one and only College Basketball program to go undefeated.
