Indiana Football: What Hoosiers need most to compete in Big Ten
By Dylan Broady
What can our Indiana football program do to change their fortunes in the Big Ten?
This past season our Hoosiers went a devastating 2-7 in Big Ten play. There are many things the university can do to change the Indiana football program around. We love our football here in Indiana. A lot of people fail to realize how much we absolutely crave a BCS contender. Indiana creates a great football experience each and every game. Why hasn’t the athletic department focused more on making us a true contender?
There are many Big Ten schools that have really good football and basketball programs. Why can’t we be the same? Here in the Hoosier state there isn’t a lot to do on a daily basis besides the mundane tasks we need to perform each and every day. We use our sports programs to escape the every day grind. I want to ask the question, why can’t we boast a dual threat in men’s athletics?
Many other Big Ten schools strive for greatness. We haven’t even tried to make our football program anything more than a mediocre fiasco. So what are some big things that could change up our program going forward? The very first thing we need is a young talented offensive coordinator that will bring excitement and bring the new style of football to the team. We need a young fresh mind calling the shots.
We have talent on both sides of the ball. Our problems lie behind the out of bounds stripes. We need to also invest more money into our football team. We are competitive, it’s not like we can’t win a game. Even if it feels that way. We have a great opportunity to really showcase our talent by being in the Big Ten.
Beat Michigan and Purdue on a regular basis, you could even throw in Penn State. Beat these blue blood programs consistently and the top recruits won’t think twice about playing here. We need to win Big Ten games more than any other if we want a shot at getting anyone’s attention. We also need to pay our coach as a Big Ten coach. Really invest in Tom Allen or let him go and hire someone you do want to invest in.
Either way, Indiana will have to invest more money into the program as a whole or continue to be the laughing stock of the Big Ten. What high school player that got denied by Notre Dame or Purdue wouldn’t want to come here to prove those programs wrong? There are a lot of talented players out there sitting the benches of these other programs instead of being star players for us.
We need some major changes and we need them now. What all of us can do is voice how we feel and let the athletic department know we want more football. As far as they can see the basketball program is their bread and butter. That’s a topic for another day. Hopefully, we get these issues turned around and start winning meaningful games in 2019.
Wear your Indiana football gear, let’s talk about it. We need to show as fans how we truly feel about this program so we can help makes some major changes. Big Ten football is all about a tough downhill run game and a stout defense. If we can muster up enough talent to fill those holes we should be just fine going forward.
