Former Indiana standout Troy Williams signed a 10-day contract recently with the Houston Rockets. It appears now they will extend his deal for the remainder of the season.
Another one of Indiana basketball’s former standout players appears to be creating serious attention. Troy Williams has encountered an interesting rookie season in the NBA. After not being drafted in the 2016 NBA Draft, Williams battled his way to the NBA multiple times this season.
The Houston Rockets signed Troy Williams to a 10-day contract on March 9th from the NBA D-League’s Iowa Energy. He was then assigned to the Houston Rockets D-League affiliate the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Williams is averaging 21.8 points, five rebounds and shooting 55.2-percent from the field.
The Rockets have now indicated that they will be signing Troy Williams for the remainder of the season following his 10-day contract.
It has been the story of Indiana Hoosiers who have been battle tested and proven their way to the pros after being overlooked and undrafted. Williams teammate for three seasons at Indiana, Yogi Ferrell, was recently given the opportunity to showcase his skills with the Mavericks. He took that opportunity and turned it into a two-year contract.
Troy Williams looks to repeat that success if is given the opportunity to play with the Rockets. He appeared in 24 games with the Memphis Grizzlies earlier this season. He started in 13 of those games and had a career high 19-points against the Miami Heat in November. Williams was averaging 5.3 points, 1.9 rebounds, 0.8 assists per game while playing for the Grizzlies.
One of the highlights of Troy Williams season so far could be winning the D-League All-Star Dunk Contest. He represented the Iowa Energy and took home the award with some impressive slams. If Williams is given a legitimate opportunity to play with the Rockets in some form, he could definitely help add to an already explosive offensive. Pairing his athleticism and ability to score could give the Rockets a reason to believe they might have struck gold in undrafted Williams.
