Indiana Football: All-time top 5 in Passing Yards
By Eric Brown
For one season back in 2008, Ben Chappell was the back-up to Kellen Lewis. After Lewis’ dismissal the following year, Chappell became the default starting quarterback.
During that 2009 season, Lewis and Chappell almost split reps at the quarterback spot 50-50. Lewis threw 193 passes, and Ben threw for 153. As the starter in the 2009 season, Chappell showed that maybe he should have been the starter the whole time, he threw for just under 3,000 yards with 17 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.
The following season he started all 12 games for the Hoosiers, improving his stats by practically every metric. He increased the amount of yards thrown for by 300 yards, and greatly improving his TD-INT ratio, throwing for 24 touchdowns to only nine interceptions.
Despite not being drafted after his collegiate career was over, Chappell found his way to the Redskins in the 2010 season as they signed him to a deal. He may not have ever played in the NFL, but at least he can say he was on an NFL roster.
