Men’s Basketball

Check out the game summary of the Hoosiers 75-70 win against Michigan State here.

Victor Oladipo was named Big Ten Player of the Week this morning after Sunday’s stellar performance. This is his second honor in his Big Ten career (his first on November 14, 2011) and his first this season. Leading the team in scoring against Penn State and Michigan State and averaging 6.5 rebounds per game, he is definitely a threat in the conference.

Today the new AP and USA Today Coaches Polls were released, putting Indiana on the charts at No. 3. The Michigan Wolverines came in at No. 1 which will make Sunday’s game that much more critical.

Men’s Tennis

Losing to No. 25 Louisiana State on Sunday, the No. 23 Hoosiers had a long trip home from the ITA Kickoff event at Mississippi State. Two tiebreakers went to the Tigers, ending the match at 4-3.

The tennis team has a busy upcoming weekend, hosting No. 8 Oklahoma and IUPUI on Friday, Febrarury 1 and Dartmouth and Ball State of Sunday, Febrarary 3.

Women’s Tennis

The Women’s Tennis team had a demanding, yet rewarding weekend, adding three more wins to their season. Indiana hosted Marquette on Satuday and both Western Michigan and Butler in a double header on Sunday. Winning 7-0 in all matches this season, they are currently nationally ranked at No. 50.

Coming from three matches in two days, the women have a light schedule this weekend, heading to Marshall on Sunday, February 3 beginning at 10:00am.

Men’s Wrestling

It was a disappointing weekend on the road for the Hoosiers with two Big Ten losses against Wisconsin and Illinois. Friday evening, Indiana traveled to Madison and the No. 20 Badgers took home the win with a 26-9 final team score.

Before returning to Bloomington, the Hoosiers headed to Champaign on Sunday to take on the No. 6 Fightin Illini. Illinois won 30-9, moving the Hoosier season record to 6-7.

The Wrestling team’s next match is this Friday, February 1 in the University Gym against Michigan.

Women’s Swimming & Diving

No. 22 Women’s team beat Purdue 179-121 on Saturday, winning 12 of 16 events. Broadcast live by the Big Ten Network from West Lafayette, the women took an early lead with wins in the first six events.

Finishing their dual meet season, the women will travel to Louisville on Friday, February 1 at 5:00pm.

Mar 12, 2011; College Station, TX, USA; Derek Drouin of Indiana won the high jump at 7-7 3/4 (2.33m) in the 2011 NCAA Indoor Track

Track & Field

Indiana hosted 30 teams in the Indiana Relays this past Friday and Saturday.

Earlier today, Senior Derek Drouin was named the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week, the second time this season, and seventh of his career. Friday night, Drouin took home the high jump at 2.29 meters, tying him for the top of the NCAA lead. But that’s no surprise after his bronze medal win in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Their first meet on the road, the Hoosiers will compete in the Meyo Invitational at Notre Dame next weekend.

24 sports. 1 team. Go Hoosiers.

It was a casual Sunday for the Tom’s and their coaching staffs, taking part in Coaches vs. Cancer. On the court, it was everything but. Neither No. 7 Indiana nor No. 13 Michigan State backed down in this afternoon’s match up, sending Hoosier fans into another whirlwind of emotions. In the end, the Hoosiers defeated the Michigan State Spartans to claim the No. 1 spot in the B1G.

The twitter world was blowing up with comments on Victor Oladipo’s amazing performance. But then again 21 points, seven rebounds, a career high six steals, and two blocks will probably do that. He was there for the Hoosiers (18-2, 6-1) in more than just the numbers though. Constantly leading our defense and a huge contributor in the net, we can’t take him for granted.

Jan 27 2013, Bloomington, USA; Indiana Hoosiers guard Yogi Ferrell (11) lays the ball in against Michigan State Spartans guard Travis Trice (20) at Assembly Hall. Mandatory Credit: Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

The Spartans were wearing alternate uniforms, breaking out the bronze instead of their usual white. Maybe this was the magic touch for their three’s, shooting 11 of 23 from behind the arch. Keith Appling fouled out with 5:17 left, a tough loss for the Spartans at a crucial moment. (But entertainment for the students as an excuse to chant their favorite cheer.) Committing 19 turnovers, Michigan State (17-4, 6-2) had trouble stopping Indiana’s shooting. Ending up at 50.9 percent, it was the highest for the Hoosiers since their win against Minnesota on January 12th.

Both from the 2013 recruiting class, Yogi Ferrell, ranked No. 19 by Rivals, and Gary Harris, No. 25 took the court with full force. Despite the unsportsmanlike chanting from the student section, nearly resulting in a technical, Harris led Michigan State with 21 points.

In the Spartan-Hoosier history, Michigan State leads by two game wins. And the history doesn’t stop at that. Tom Crean coached under Tom Izzo at Michigan State as a graduate assistant for two years. So the handshakes were friendly this time around in contrast to Crean’s lack of words with Bo Ryan after their loss to Wisconsin.

There were rumors that recruits James Blackman, Eron Gordon, Trevon Bluiett, Collin Hartman, and Devin Davis Jr. were in attendance. Hopefully the passion from both the fans and players carried over as it did after the Hoosiers’ 97-54 win against Bryant University for Noah Vonleh, signing for Indiana the day after.

At 18-2, this is the best start the Indiana Hoosiers have had in 20 years. There’s no better time to say “we’re back” than now.

Wednesday, January 30th at 8:30pm marks the infamous rival between Indiana and Purdue taking place in West Lafayette.
